Should N.S. businesses be allowed to open Boxing Day?

HALIFAX – Nova Scotia is one of the last provinces in Canada where many stores remain closed on Boxing Day.

While shoppers in Ontario and B.C. have gotten their fill of Boxing Day sales, Maritimers will have to wait until Friday to indulge in sales at major box stores.

Retail stores in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick face hefty fines for being open on statutory holidays like Boxing Day.

The rules are detailed in the Retail Business Designate Day Closing Act, which states that supermarkets, flea markets, fish stores, canteens, fruit of vegetable stands, antique stores, art galleries, used clothing stores, laundromats and some other businesses must close on Boxing Day.

However, the rule does have some exceptions.

Drug stores, gas stations and some restaurants are allowed to open. The list also includes places that sell Christmas trees, maple sugar products and agricultural products.

Response appeared to be mixed online on whether Nova Scotia should follow suit and let businesses open on Boxing Day.
