SASKATOON – A local hard of hearing man almost lost his life this summer when he couldn’t hear his smoke detector go off. A local business has now answered the bell for special devices for Saskatoon’s deaf and hard of hearing community.

Laurie Miller has spent years being extra careful and concerned as both she and her husband are hard of hearing. A standard smoke detector wouldn’t alert them if there’s a fire and devices that would is out of their price range.

Enter Brigadier Security Systems.

“There’s a specific kind of smoke detector that produces a cadence of sound and these devices listen to that sound and they produce a strobe light, it does produce a siren but it also has a vibrating device that they would put under their mattress in their bed,” said Patrick Thompson, Brigadier Security Systems general manager.

The company jumped at the opportunity to help members of the deaf and hard of hearing community.

Laurie can now sleep easier, knowing her family is extra protected in case of a fire.

“I feel so much safer that we have this alarm, I feel very satisfied to have that especially for our family, for us,” she said.

“To see Laurie’s reaction, she’s just really tickled to have it and as I said we’re happy to provide that service, that’s our business, saving lives and protecting property and this as I say hope they’ll never have to use it but if they do, it will definitely save lives,” said Thompson.

While these devices cost more than your typical standard smoke detector, you can’t put a price on a life.

Laurie is completely overjoyed and to receive the device at this time of the year which has made her Christmas.
