Young crash victim Travis Bertrand remembered as ‘ray of sunshine’

CALGARY- The day after his young life was taken in a devastating crash, a one-year-old boy is being remembered as a ray of sunshine, who would drop everything the moment his dad walked through the door.

Travis Bertrand was killed on Wednesday evening, after the truck he was in lost control and drove over a median on Glenmore Trail, into the path of an oncoming semi. He was rushed to hospital, where he passed away a short time later.

Gerry Jackson, who is friends with Travis’ father Chris, was one of the first to hear what had happened.

“I was watching it on the news, and I knew [Chris] had a truck of that description and they were talking about a lady and two young sons,” says Jackson. “I thought, ‘no, it couldn’t have been.’”

A few minutes later his phone rang. Chris Bertrand was on the other end, confirming his worst fears.

“I was sick to my stomach. My wife was like ‘what was that all about?’ I just couldn’t talk for two minutes, I sat there in disbelief and I didn’t want to believe what I just heard. I was shocked.”

Travis’ three-year-old brother Zachary was also taken to hospital with serious injuries, and is recovering from a broken pelvis. His devastated parents are now at his bedside.

The tragedy has not only hit the family hard, but also shaken the entire city.

“It’s just a horrible, horrible thing,” says Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “I know that the thoughts are prayers of all Calgarians everyone in this country are with that family today. And certainly the mother who was driving has just undergone a tremendous loss.”

Jackson and his employees are now collecting donations for the family, doing whatever they can to help.

“[Chris’] sons meant the world to him. He’s constantly talking about his boys, he’s a good strong family man.

“We are just praying for them and hoping the other boy can heal quickly and hopefully they can be together spending Christmas as a family.”

A trust fund has been set up at the Royal Bank for the family, and donations can be made at any branch in Alberta.
