UPDATE: Blizzard creates highway havoc with crashes and closures

CALGARY – The blizzard that is blowing across central and southern Alberta is causing dangerous driving conditions on highways.

Earlier Monday, a multi-vehicle collision completely blocked the QE11 southbound between the Didsbury and Carstairs overpass.

There are reports as many as 40 vehicles may have been involved.

The Trans-Canada Highway east of Calgary has been closed in both directions between Calgary and Brooks. Travel is not recommended between Brooks and the Saskatchewan border.

RCMP in Gleichen, east of Calgary, say there have been several  multi-vehicle vehicle collisions on the Trans-Canada west of Gleichen and in the Cluny area.

They include a six vehicle crash that involved three semis.

RCMP confirm visibility is less that 10 metres with icy conditions and severe drifting. Plows have been pulled from the highway.

The Trans-Canada Highway west of Calgary is in fair condition with snow and drifting snow.

Highway 2 south of Calgary is also listed in fair condition.
