Trans-Canada Highway reopens

CALGARY- The Trans-Canada Highway reopened on Tuesday afternoon, after being closed due to a blizzard that has wreaked havoc across southern Alberta.

Alberta Transportation closed Highway 1 from Stoney Trail in Calgary to Highway 36 near Brooks on Monday.

The roadway was too dangerous for drivers, who were urged to find shelter in a safe location or their vehicle.

RCMP say a number of cars and transport trucks went into the ditch, crashed, or got stuck in a huge snow drift on Hwy 1 westbound at Hwy 21, about 12 kilometers east of the town of Strathmore. A temporary emergency shelter was opened at the Strathmore Civic Centre.

The highway has since been fully reopened between Calgary and Brooks.
