If the forecast of continued dry weather holds for the next week , Metro Vancouver could be in for the longest dry spell in any October since 1991.

Environment Canada has no rain in the forecast until at least October 23.

There’s also been no measurable rain at the Vancouver Airport for the last nine days.

Global BC meteorologist Mark Madryga says in 1991, Metro Vancouver was rain-free for the first 15 days of the month.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

In fact, from September 1 to October 15 that year, the Vancouver Airport recorded only three days with measurable rain.

“Interestingly enough, that major dry spell came after the torrential rains at the end of August 1991, which rained out the PNE for days,” says Madryga.

An even longer October dry spell settled in during October 1987, with 21 consecutive days without rain.

In stark contrast, this past September was the third wettest in the last 77 years for the Metro Vancouver region.

So far, October has seen 25 mm of rain.

In comparison, last year we had 197 mm in October, with the average for the month being 113 mm.

October has also seen a temperature record shattered.

Earlier this month, a record high was set at the Vancouver Airport at 21.2 degrees , edging out the old record of 20.6, set in 1953.
