Long weekend Checkstop nabs third highest number of impaired drivers in 2013

EDMONTON- The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) says despite years of warning motorists of the dangers of drinking and driving, far too many still aren’t getting the message.

Over the Thanksgiving long weekend, Edmonton police set up a Checkstop at one location for just a few hours.

“What we saw in that time is extremely disturbing,” explained Staff Sgt. Ted Hrebien of the EPS Major Collision Investigation Unit.

Police arrested nine impaired drivers and handed out four roadside suspensions. Three other criminal charges were given out, as well as 14 tickets.

Of the 19 Checkstops that police have conducted this year, this one saw the third highest number of impaired drivers arrested, according to the EPS.

“Results like we had this weekend mean that far too many Edmontonians just aren’t getting the message. The excuses we hear – people not realizing how much they’ve had to drink or not finding a taxi at the end of the night – none of those excuses could ever soothe the family of the person you kill because you were driving drunk,” Hrebien expressed.

The EPS encourages anyone who suspects someone of driving impaired to call 9-1-1 as soon as it’s safe to do so.
