EDMONTON – A bizarre hit and run collision between a minivan and a front-end loader, which is often used in construction, ended Tuesday with multiple charges being laid.

Police say Mitchell Charuk was driving the heavy machinery in the area of 109 Street and 107 Avenue around 5:30 pm, when he crashed into a minivan, ripping off its driver’s side door and sending the mother and child inside to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Charuk is accused of fleeing the scene of the crash in the loader, which had been reported stolen from a company in Nisku the day before.

Witnesses followed the erratic vehicle down an alley, until it stopped in a parking lot just off 109 Street. According to police, the driver tried to flee on foot, but was stopped by a man who held him until police arrived.
