Boy charged with attempted murder appears in court

SASKATOON – A nearby community is still reeling from news that a young teen allegedly tried to commit murder against another youth his own age.

On Monday morning, a 13-year-old boy charged with attempted murder made a brief appearance at provincial court in Saskatoon.

Both the accused and victim are students in the Prairie Spirit School Division.

“We have learned that these two people are known to one another and that they in fact, attend the same school together,” said Sgt. Warren Gherasim, Warman RCMP.

On Friday evening, RCMP were called to a home in Warman, Sask. and found a 13-year-old girl suffering from multiple stab wounds to her lower body, abdomen and neck.

The alleged attack took place in an alley behind the victim’s house.

The boy was found two hours later and the weapon used in the incident remains at large.

“It’s surprising, it’s tragic. It’s something you never expect is going to happen in your community – in your school division,” said John Kuzbik, director of education for the Prairie Spirit School Division.

A critical incident response team has been working with the principal of the school both the victim and the suspect attend.

“As a parent, you put a lot of trust and faith in your students. As a teacher, you provide them with a lot of coaching and opportunities to make good decisions,” said Kuzbik.

But so far, little is known as to why this happened in the first place.

The accused in this case is subject to the Youth Criminal Justice Act. That means his name cannot be released.

He has been remanded in custody and will make his next court appearance on Tuesday.
