TORONTO- A non-profit group in Kington-Galloway is trying to give underprivileged youth the chance to express themselves through art workshops.

Healthy Living Through Art started five years ago and has since grown to support numerous youth between the ages of five and 18 in the free, bi-weekly program.

Participants are given instruction in basic theory by a professional artist.

By removing barriers to accessing art materials as well as professional instruction, the program hopes to foster a love and appreciation of the arts.

They also engage in an interactive information session directed by a health practitioner, post-secondary student or community member.

The Scarborough Hospital and the volunteer committee members of the artists walkway partnered with Healthy Living Through Art to display the children’s creations.

“They just blow me away! It’s so colourful and some of them are like six and seven [years old] and how did they get that painting on the canvas to make a picture is mind boggling to me,” said Debbie Vandenberg, manager of volunteer services at The Scarborough Hospital.

“It’s just a fabulous opportunity for children to express their thoughts and their ideas about health and healthy lifestyles. Goes hand in hand with what we are trying to do here.”
