Trial of Richard Kachkar, accused of killing Sgt. Ryan Russell, continues

TORONTO – Emergency officials who assisted in the arrest of Richard Kachkar after he allegedly drove a stolen snowplow through the snow-covered roads of Toronto in 2011 testified in court Wednesday that Kachkar was acting “unusually” after being arrested.

Kachkar is currently charged with first-degree murder in the death of Toronto Police Officer Sgt. Ryan Russell.

Russell died after being struck while trying to stop a stolen snowplow allegedly driven by Kachkar near Davenport Road and Avenue Road.

Firefighter Eric Macmillan testified Wednesday that he was walking home when he saw Kachkar being taken down by police.

Macmillan said that he heard Kachkar mention a Russian videogame, Facebook, his mother being on facebook and 9/11 while police waited for paramedics to arrive.

Paramedic Bruce Campbell, who testified Wednesday, said that while in the back of the ambulance on the way to St. Michael’s Hospital, Kachkar said he was concerned paramedics would poison him or insert a microchip into his body.
