Environment Canada lifts all severe thunderstorm warnings issued for Alberta

Several areas north of Whitecourt, Alta. were under a severe thunderstorm warning late Thursday afternoon.

Shortly before 5 p.m., Environment Canada said its meteorologists were tracking a storm “capable of producing strong wind gusts, up to nickel-sized hail and heavy rain.”

The weather agency issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of the M.D. of Big Lakes.

“This thunderstorm is located 15 km northwest and is nearly stationary,” Environment Canada said on its website. “The main threat with this thunderstorm is heavy rain.”

People in the area were advised to take cover if threatening weather approaches and being warned heavy rain could result in flash flooding.

At 7:43 p.m., a severe thunderstorm warning was also issued for parts of Clearwater and Yellowhead Counties.

Environment Canada said the storm was located about 45 kilometres northwest of Nordegg and was moving southeastward at about 35 kilometres per hour.

At 8:26 p.m., Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning of Lac Ste. Anne County, Clearwater County and the O’Chiese 203 reserve.

By 9:55 p.m., all severe thunderstorm warnings issued for Alberta had been lifted.
