WINIPEG — Some Winnipeg students are sharing a special Christmas tradition with their community this year.
Elementary school students at Grosvenor School have been giving up part of their lunch break this month to sing Christmas tunes at the caroling club.
“It really fills my heart when I sing, it makes me happy,” said Grade 4 student Anna Omichinski.
All of the practice is to prepare for the one big night, when they take their concert to the community.
Music teacher Joan Hanton had the idea to take the students caroling five years ago.
“It’s a little Christmas present that doesn’t have to be bought,” she said.
“They’ll remember the expressions on people’s faces and they’ll remember the feeling that doesn’t come with a dollar sign attached to it.”
The students are the driving force behind keeping the club going.
“It’s fun to go around the neighbourhood and sing to people. It’s fun to see their expressions,” said Cassidy Robbins, who is in Grade 5.
Andrea Powell, the principal of the school, is proud of her students and wants to teach them how they can make a difference.
“I love the idea of students feeling like they’re part of a larger community and that they feel like they have a voice, literally in this case. And that they can be giving back to the community,” she said.
