An arctic outbreak of air is set to slam Saskatoon down toward the -20s!
Fall 2016 Recap
Meteorological winter kicked off on December 1st, which means meteorological fall, which includes the months of September, October and November, has come to an end.
It was a warmer and slightly wetter than normal fall for Saskatoon, however it was a bit of a roller coaster looking back through the months.
September was warm and dry, October was cold and wet, followed by a warm and dry November.
Overall the numbers levelled out average temperatures being 2.1 degrees warmer than normal in Saskatoon.

Most of that came on the overnight low side of things with lows sitting 2.8 degrees warmer than normal, meantime daytime highs were 1.4 degrees above seasonal.
Altogether we saw 110 per cent of our normal precipitation with 74.1 millimetres recorded at the Saskatoon airport throughout the three-month period when normally we would receive 67.2 millimetres.
A significant chunk of that precipitation fell in October with the heavy snow that fell at the start of the month.
Saskatoon Forecast
Today
Another mild day for this second day of December with temperatures only dipping back to -3 this morning under cloudy skies with extremely light freezing drizzle seen in the Saskatoon area at times.
A freezing drizzle advisory was issued earlier in the day for the Prince Albert, Regina, La Ronge and Melfort areas, but was ended for the northern portion of the warning early in the afternoon.
By noon some light snow had been reported at the airport with the mercury expected to sit around -2 to -3 for the remainder of the day under mostly cloudy skies with a slight chance of flurries.
Tonight
The clouds won’t be going anywhere tonight as temperatures dip back to around -4 or so overnight.
Saturday
A weak low pressure system will swing through on Saturday and bring with it a chance of flurries midday tomorrow.
Temperatures should swing up one last time with an expected daytime high just below the freezing mark.
Skies will then start to clear in the evening, allowing us to cool down quickly back into mid-minus single digits.
Sunday
Cooler air begins to press in on Sunday behind Saturday’s weak low pressure system with some sunshine expected during the day.
With a cooler start to the day in mid-to-low minus single digits, temperatures will likely only top out around -2 or -3 during the day despite the sunshine we’re expecting.
Work Week Outlook
Then a second stronger system that sat in the north over the weekend will sweep us into the real cold on Monday, cooling us down from -7 near midnight, down to -13 by evening with a good chance of some snow.
The outbreak of arctic air then floods the region right into the foreseeable future with daytime highs in mid-minus teens and overnight lows down as low as the -20s with -30 wind chills likely.
Amidst this polar plunge, sky conditions will likely remain mostly to partly cloudy with a chance of light snow at times throughout the first full week of December.
