Toronto police have identified the victim of a drive-by shooting during the evening rush hour on Friday.
Police said 25-year-old Adrian Thomas was a passenger in a SUV going westbound on Eglinton Avenue East at Sloane Avenue at around 6:10 p.m.
A dark SUV then pulled up on the passenger side at a red light and someone fired a number of bullets at the vehicle he was in, police said.
“This was a very troubling act in that the vehicle was shot up during the rush hour where there is huge potential for other individuals to be injured or killed by gunfire,” said Det. Brandon Price, from the Toronto police homicide squad.
“We believe this vehicle was targeted.”
Police can’t confirm, however, whether Thomas was the intended target or if this was a case of mistaken identity.
The suspect vehicle then fled north on Sloane Avenue.
Thomas died in hospital and officers believe there were many pedestrians and drivers in the area at the time with information.
Investigators are asking witnesses or anyone who may have dashboard or security camera footage to call 33 Division at 416-808-3300 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477.
Thomas’ death was the city’s 59th homicide.
