VERNON, B.C., – Young woman are being drawn to the sport of game hunting in B.C., now making up almost nine per cent of those issued licences, according to the B.C. Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations.
Hunters like Candice Mikkelson from Falkland, west of Vernon, are excited by the trend.
“There’s nothing more rewarding than having organic meat provided for your family,” said Mikkelson. “You can’t get more organic than hunting out in the bush.”
Seeing an opportunity, Mikkelson began a woman’s hunting theme clothing and accessory business from home.
“Why not look pretty when you’re out there shooting too,” she said.
Mikkelson took up a table at the Vernon Fish and Game Club Gun Show Friday and Saturday at the Vernon Rec Centre.
The club has seen an increase in not only woman members, but families who are interested in a new group activity.
Club secretary Phyllis Bowman says when she began hunting in B.C., anyone could take a gun anywhere.
“No judgement actually, if you look back,” said Bowman. “Kids would bring their .22’s to school and go hunting afterwards.”
Bowman says families are increasingly aware of where their food is from and want to be more involved in the process, especially when it’s organic.
The gun show continues Saturday, Aug 27 until 3 p.m.
