Toronto police say witnesses are not cooperating with investigators, but surveillance video has been released of a suspect seen wiping his fingerprints from a minivan in connection with the death of a 27-year-old man who was intentionally killed in a hit-and-run.
Det. Steve Henkel said during a news conference Wednesday Steven Doyle was targeted when he was fatally struck on a sidewalk by a blue Dodge Caravan speeding northbound on George Street near Gerrard Street East just before 6 p.m. Monday.
Doyle was pronounced dead at the scene and Henkel said debris was scattered for hundreds of meters. He added the minivan that hit Doyle was found abandoned shortly after the collision in the parking lot of 285 Shuter St.

“As the investigation progressed it became clear that Doyle was targeted and the act was a deliberate intent to harm him,” Henkel said, adding that the homicide squad then took over the investigation.
“We’ve collected quite a bit of high quality video, which we continue to go through. We wanted to release this video today in hopes of seeking the public’s help in identifying the driver who fled the scene.”
Henkel said the video captures the suspect as he abandoned the minivan, before removing his jacket and wiping off fingerprints on both the inside and outside of the vehicle — something Henkel said showed that he was “evidence conscience.” He then fled the area in a southbound direction.

Police described the suspect as a brown-skinned male, with light complexion, standing 5’8″ to 5’10” tall, with a slim-to-medium build and dark brown shoulder length hair tied into a bun. He was last seen wearing a dark-coloured athletic type jacket with white stripes on the sides and prescription glasses with rectangular frames.
Henkel also said media reports have described numerous motives for the fight that occurred before the intentional hit-and-run, including a robbery or a drug deal gone wrong, but police have not been able to confirm those details.
“We’re seeking the public’s assistance in determining the exact nature of the altercation that led to this event,” Henkel said.
“We know there were quite a few people on George Street at that time of day from the review of the video. We would encourage those people to come forward and speak with us.”
Henkel said the collision itself was captured on surveillance cameras, and that it would be “just a matter of time before we identify him and we take him into custody.”
