There was a wonderful sight for southside drivers using Whitemud Drive on Thursday morning, as all six lanes of the freeway were open under the 53 Avenue bridge for the first time in months.
Work began on the bridge rehabilitation project in late March, reducing the Whitemud to two lanes in both directions.

The city is giving the south Edmonton overpass a facelift in order to extend its lifespan. Construction on the bridge has included the replacement of minor bridge girders and deck and minor substructure repairs.
First constructed in 1977, the 53 Avenue overpass carries six lanes of traffic as well as two turning lanes and two pedestrian walkways over Whitemud Drive.
