WEST KELOWNA, B.C. – Flames quickly devoured a detached garage Wednesday evening in the Pinewoods Villa community on Lenz Road.
West Kelowna Fire Rescue (WKFR) was called to the blaze around 5:30 p.m. as a tall plume of black smoke rose to the sky and flames threatened nearby homes.
The fire also began spreading to pine trees near the property.
“An aggressive fire attack by Engine Company 32 (Lakeview Heights) quickly brought the garage fire under control,” Brent Watson, assistant fire chief, said in a press release about the blaze. “Subsequent WKFR units were sent into the forested area behind the garage to extinguish a small grass fire and to patrol for hotspots.”
Watson said the homeowner was able to remove their vehicle before it caught fire.
Two nearby homes sustained damage. Vinyl siding was melting and had begun to burn, according to Watson.
While the blaze is not suspicious, it is under investigation.
No one was injured but due to damage to their property, the occupants of the home are in the care of Emergency Support Services.
