Human-caused fires spark outrage in Vernon

BX Swan Lake Fire Department

VERNON–The BX Swan Lake Fire Department responded to two human-caused fires in two days.

On Friday, they were called to BX Falls, where an abandoned campfire had spread out of control.

Crews were able to put it out quickly, and soak the ground around it to make sure it didn’t spread along the forest floor.

Then on Saturday, they were called to an area just off Silver Star Road – where they found an abandoned camper completely engulfed in flames.

Investigators have determined that it was also human caused.

“People need to be far more aware of their actions and think of things like Fort St. John and Fort McMurray,” says Assistant Fire Chief Steve Hidasi.  “That can very well happen here.”

Crews were able to get a handle on that fire quickly as well, but Hidasi says it was a dangerous situation, because the fire was in the forest right under Silver Star Resort.

“That has a far greater risk of running through the forest, and it’s not near a water source,” says Hidasi.
