A Kitchener woman who was following her GPS in stormy weather accidentally drove into a Lake Huron harbour Thursday evening, fully submerging her car underwater.

Ontario Provincial Police in Bruce Peninsula said the 23-year-old woman was following her GPS while driving in the dark through rainy and foggy conditions.

She then took a wrong turn and drove straight into Little Tub Harbour in Tobermory, Ont. around 11:55 p.m.

Police say the driver was able to roll down her window and swim 30 metres to shore where she called for help.

Local businessowner Andrea Vincze says her husband Zsolt, an experienced scuba diver, was asked by local firefighters to help remove the car from the water by attaching a roped hook.

“When we went down there I didn’t see anything, the car was not visible it was too deeply submerged into the water,” Vincze told Global News, adding that it was pouring rain and pitch black out when the woman drove into the water.

“It was sad to hear that they were sort of laughing at the person who went into the water … it was pretty bad weather and she was new in town so if someone is new and doesn’t see the water is there it can happen — so I actually felt sorry for her.

Police said the vehicle was towed from the water just before 8:30 Friday morning and the boat launch has since been reopened.

Tobermory is a small community at the northern tip of the Bruce Peninsula, about 107 kilometres north of Owen Sound.
