Vanessa DeBlasio said she was walking her baby and her Terrier, Fergie, through Airdrie’s Morningside neighbourhood Sunday morning when two large dogs escaped the back of a truck and went after her beloved pet.

“They jumped out and severely started attacking Fergie, and just destroyed her,” DeBlasio said, fighting back tears.

“I tried to get in and pull her. I got her for a second and then they came back and pulled her down and just destroyed her.”

Fergie’s injuries were so severe the family made the difficult decision to euthanize her.

DeBlasio suffered bites to her hands during the attack. She said the dogs’ owner left, but a stranger stayed to help with her baby.

“This amazing woman helped me push my baby and all I can say is…thank God that my 10-month-old was completely unharmed, because those dogs–nothing was going to get in their way. They were out to kill.”

Neighbour Kim Favel is using social media in an effort to help track down the dogs’ owners.

“I think it’s disgusting that they left,” Favel said. “I understand that sometimes you can’t control dogs; they are animals…but take responsibility for your pet and be there for the person who was injured or the other owner’s dog.”

Airdrie municipal enforcement will told Global News the incident is under investigation and that the owner could face charges of dog at large, dog bite and dog chase.

A mandatory court appearance could be required.

DeBlasio wants the dogs’ owners will come forward, and hopes no one else will go through a similar experience.

“I just don’t want anybody else—a dog or a baby next time.

“This is such a great neighbourhood, everyone walks along there, so it’s concerning for everyone.”
