Police are investigating after a woman alleged she was sexually assaulted by an Uber driver in Markham, Ont. early Tuesday morning.
York Regional Police say the incident happened between midnight and 1 a.m. after the woman booked a ride to her home.
“The victim started out in Toronto and took a bus and then arranged for transportation from that stop,” said Const. Laura Nicolle.
Police did not reveal the exact location in Markham where the alleged incident took place, however they did say she was not injured.
“We can’t confirm the suspect information yet. We are still looking into that aspect, of what type of transportation she arranged and who this driver was,” Nicolle explained.
Police say no arrest has been made and it isn’t known if both parties knew each other.
Uber Canada issued a statement saying they are co-operating with police.
“We take every safety incident very seriously and are committed to the safety of everyone who uses Uber,” said spokeswoman Susie Heath.
“As soon as we became aware of the investigation, we reached out to York Regional Police to offer our assistance. Our safety response team is working quickly to gather information.”
