Toronto police are launching a 10-week crime blitz called Project Blue Monkey in the city’s Chinatown area beginning on Friday.
Authorities will be targeting criminal activity such as auto thefts, shoplifting, panhandling, public intoxication, drugs and graffiti.
“Chinatown is a very safe neighbourhood which attracts both local visitors and tourists,” said police in a media release.
“Officers will provide a heightened presence in the area, and will be proactive by visiting local businesses and reviewing crime-prevention strategies.”
Police have initiated similar programs in the past by educating residents, business owners and visitors of potential criminal activity.
Workshops and presentations are also planned this year targeting fraudulent tax scams and identity theft.
