Explosives found in rural area ditch in Sicamous

SICAMOUS — Along with yard waste and other debris in a roadside ditch on Hallfish Road in the Sicamous area, police were notified of an odd discovery on Monday.

RCMP say a local citizen was cleaning up illegally dumped garbage in a roadside ditch when she located a large military-like ordinance amongst the debris.

The RCF Navy Ordinance Disposal unit attended and removed the item on Tuesday, according to Cpl. Dan Moskaluk.

“The woman had been cleaning up area ditches when she came across what she described as a tank shell,” said Moskaluk in a news release.

“The Sicamous RCMP attended to the isolated rural area, examined the item and immediately notified the Royal Canadian Forces Navy Ordinance Disposal Unit at CFB Esquimalt, in order for them to attend and assess the item.”

Moskaluk says the area was guarded until the arrival of the military ODU technicians who arrived Tuesday morning.

He says the item was safely removed and transported to a Vernon area National Defence property where it was safely disposed of.

The origins of the ordinance remain as a mystery and we would certainly appreciate any information as how it ended up in this ditch. We understand that members of the public could possibly be in possession of collectible war memorabilia and be unsure of how to dispose of them, however this was not the right way.  said Moskaluk

Anyone with information as to the origins of this ordinance are asked to contact the Sicamous RCMP at 250-836-2878.
