UPDATE: Owner ‘in shock’ after pit bull reported stolen is returned

It is not uncommon to see missing animal posts on social media, but one Alberta couple has been getting a lot of extra reaction thanks to a video that appears to show their dog being stolen.

Darla Stavropoulos told Global News she first noticed her dog Prince missing when she went outside to feed him Jan. 21. Darla and Greg own two dogs: their pit-bull Prince and a golden retriever Copper.

When Darla went outside the afternoon of Jan. 21, only one dog greeted her. At first she was not overly concerned as their dog Prince had run away once before.

On a hunch, Darla reviewed the surveillance video from their security system. That’s where she says a vehicle can be seen pulling up to their front gate and encouraging their dog to get inside before driving off.

The video, which you can watch above, appears to show a dark-coloured SUV stop at a gate at the end of a driveway. A short time later a dog seems to respond to being beckoned by the driver. At looks like the vehicle then drives off with the dog inside.

Blackfalds RCMP confirmed Darla and Greg Stavropoulos filed a report about a stolen dog at or around Jan. 21.

Although they had filed a police report, Darla told us that she also made a plea on social media in the hopes of getting some immediate help.

The post spread quickly and soon Darla was contacted by some strangers who told her they knew who had Prince. They even sent her a couple photos of a man with what appeared to be their missing dog, she said.

Darla said they took that information to the Blackfalds RCMP and, due to procedural delays, Greg decided to see if he could find Prince himself.

Darla said her husband Greg was taken to a home in Innisfail where they had heard the man in the photo was staying with his brother.

Darla said Greg spoke with a man in the house who told him that the man they were looking for had recently taken off.

Global News attempted to contact the Blackfalds RCMP Tuesday night for a comment but the office was closed for the day.
