Woman shot as she slept a ‘random act of violence’: Edmonton police

EDMONTON — Police are investigating after a woman was shot as she slept in her southwest Edmonton home Sunday.

“The shooting appears to be a very serious random act of violence,” acting Det. Dylan Witwer said in a news release. “There were other people sleeping in the home at the time, including a child.”

Police said emergency crews responded to a call in the area of Graham Wynd and 199 Street SW just before 5 a.m. The 49-year-old woman was rushed to hospital, where she is in stable but critical condition. No one else was hurt.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“We believe the shot was fired from 199th Street toward the home,” Witwer said. “At this point it is early in our investigation and we are exploring all leads.”

A neighbour who didn’t want to give her name said the woman is very kind, and works in retail to support her disabled son.
