WINNIPEG — Adam Lowry didn’t have time to sulk after getting demoted by the Winnipeg Jets. Lowry made his Manitoba Moose debut only hours after getting re-assigned by the Jets.

“It’s obviously a bit of a shock,” Lowry said. “I think you go through a hundred or so games straight in the NHL it catches you a bit off guard.”

Lowry is still only 22-years-old so there’s no reason to think he can’t return to the player he was just a year ago.

“It’s tough obviously,” Lowry said. “With the way my play has been all year, you know I don’t think I can say it’s a huge surprise obviously. It catches you a bit off guard when it does happen, but I’m here and gonna try to make the best of it.”

While some players can’t admit their failures, Lowry who’s suffering through a sophomore slump, knows his game isn’t in the same place as it was last season.

“I’m just trying to get back to the player I was last year,” Lowry said. “I think last year in the playoffs especially I was able to be an impact player with the Jets. You know that hasn’t always been the case this year. I think it’s been a bit of a maturation process and you know it’s one that hasn’t gone as smoothly as I hoped.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Lowry is back playing for Keith McCambridge who coached him for parts of two seasons with the St. John’s IceCaps.

“Adam’s a bright young man with a bright future ahead of him,” Moose head coach Keith McCambridge said. “This will be a blip when he looks down the road in his career with what’s taking place here.”

Getting demoted for the first time can certainly be a blow to one’s confidence and if anyone knows how he’s feeling it’s Moose forward Nic Petan who went through the same emotions when he was sent down by the Jets last month.

“I don’t know he seemed pretty positive,” Petan said. “I think we talked a little bit but I think in those situations you just have to stay positive and hopefully he’s back up soon.”

It’s been a long and fast fall for Lowry who was the first line centre on the opening day of Jets training camp. He scored 11 goals in 2014-15, but he’s only managed one goal and seven assists in the first 31 games this season.

“Some of it has to do with confidence and you know making the right reads and just being assertive on the ice.” Lowry said. “You know sometimes when you’re a little tentative out there you look a little slower.”

Lowry has not been given any sort of time frame for how long he’ll be down with the Moose.

“It’s one you got to work out on your own.” Lowry said. “You got to either force their hand or continue to work on your game. I think that’s what I’m going to be down here to do. I’m going to continue to try and get better every day and continue to try and help this team. And when the time comes hopefully go back up there and make an impact up there.”
