No small feat: Gabarus lighthouse moved from edge of a cliff

GABARUS, CAPE BRETON – On the edge of a cliff in Cape Breton sits a 125-year-old lighthouse that, up until Friday, was within a couple metres of its life.

With the help of contractors and – believe it or not – a lot of dish liquid, the Gabarus lighthouse is being moved from its perilous place on the cliff.

Because of coastal erosion, the lighthouse was about two metres from toppling onto the shoreline. The seawall has worn away over time because storms and the harsh weather in the area.

Contractor Jim Demeyere said he’s moved many buildings in his life but has “never moved a lighthouse before.”

If he pulls off Friday’s move, it would be the crowning achievement of his career.

Dish detergent is being used as a lubricant, because new environmental rules mean they can’t use conventional grease.

Many spectators came out on a windy Cape Breton day to watch the big move. Demeyere hopes to complete the job Friday, but high winds could make for a delay.
