Impaired driver calls 911 for help starting car: police

TORONTO — A 27-year-old Richmond Hill man faces impaired driving related charges after police say he called 911 to for help getting his car started while intoxicated.

York Regional Police received a non-emergency call from the man on Tuesday at about 2:30 a.m., asking for help in the area of Bathurst Street and King Road in King Township, Ont.

The 911 operator allegedly heard the car’s engine revving in the background as the driver attempted to get his car started.

Officers responded to the scene and found the car running, with the lights and window wipers on, and the driver was found at the scene showing “obvious signs of being impaired by alcohol.”

Police arrested the driver at the scene and he was taken to a police station for a breathalyzer test, where he blew over the legal limit.

Andrew Scuglia has been charged with over 80 care or control and impaired care or control, which is a criminal offence against a person who is impaired by drug or alcohol and is making attempts to operate a vehicle.

Police are encouraging anyone to call 911 if they believe a driver is impaired by drugs or alcohol and anyone with information is asked to contact the York Regional Police or Crime Stoppers.
