TORONTO — A Durham Regional Police officer has been charged with assault after witnesses reported seeing him slap a man who had already been arrested.
Police said an unnamed man was arrested on Nonquon Road in Oshawa on Wednesday in connection with an unknown disturbance.
Witnesses reported to police that while the man was on the ground handcuffed, an officer allegedly slapped him on the head.
Members of the DRPS Professional Standards Unit investigated the incident and have charged the officer involved.
Jeremiah Johnson, 40, of Central West Division, has been charged with assault. He was released with conditions.
Police said Johnson had been reassigned to administrative duties ahead of an upcoming court date on Nov. 27.
