Garage, shed break-ins rising on Saskatoon’s east side

SASKATOON – Police are sounding the alarm after recent string of break-ins into detached garages and sheds on Saskatoon’s east side. The number of break-ins has been consistently on the rise since 2013.

There were 96 reported between January and August of this year.

Police say homeowners can play a role in stopping the break-ins.

“In 55 of the 96 reported incidents for this year, doors or windows were left unlocked,” said Kelsie Fraser, a spokesperson with Saskatoon Police Service.

“What we do is classify those as crimes of opportunity. People are walking down and their just trying handles, and luck of the draw one is open and that’s where they go.”

Police are reminding residents that locking up is a key step in prevention.
