BEACONSFIELD – The deadline is fast approaching for Beaconsfield residents to select their new “smart” garbage bins.
Residents have until Friday to pick them up.
The bins, along with cameras installed in a new generation of garbage trucks, is causing controversy.
The bins are equipped with microchips that carry address information.

Residents told Global News they’re worried about what that information will be used for, especially since there will be photos.
“It is an invasion of privacy,” said resident David Harries, who was collecting his bin when he spoke to Global News.
Nonetheless, he added, the city’s plan to right-size collection is a sound idea.
City officials downplayed criticism, estimating it will save $100,000 a year.
The new system will start in January.
