BEACONSFIELD – City officials have unveiled a plan to further monitor garbage collection in Beaconsfield – by putting cameras on the trucks.
Residents were instantly unsettled by the news.
“Big Brother is here,” said Joanne Maher, a resident.
“I’m not sure why they’d put cameras on trucks.”
According to Beaconsfield City Manager Patrice Boileau, the city is replacing two-person garbage crews with one-person crews.
“The camera replaces the spotter,” he said.
“It’s a safety measure.”
Once the garbage has been dumped into the trucks, the cameras will allow the driver will be able to see what has been tossed out.
From there, the workers can decide if there are any hazardous materials that need to be flagged.
The cameras will be installed in the city’s new garbage trucks in 2016.
