Group calls for quick replacement of the Louise Bridge

A group gathered at the Louise Bridge on Saturday to demand the City of Winnipeg prioritize the replacement of the aging structure. Submitted

WINNIPEG – A group of Winnipeggers is calling on the city to better prioritize the replacement of the aging Louise Bridge.

About a dozen people gathered at the foot of the nearly 100-year-old bridge Saturday to demand something be done.

Elmood MLA Jim Maloway is spearheading the group and calling for a new crossing which he said the city had previously budgeted for, however, he claims those funds have been diverted to other city projects.

The group is distributing survey leaflets in the northeast part of the city and asking Winnipeggers if they think the old bridge should be replaced with a new, four lane bridge.

The handout said the bridge holds 25,000 cars per day.

Back in August, the bridge was closed for a temporary inspection and deck repairs.

Several steel expansion joints that span the width of the bridge deck and the concrete that surrounds them need to be repaired, a city spokeswoman said.
