Teen hit and killed by vehicle in southeast Calgary

CALGARY – A teenage boy was hit and killed by a vehicle in the southeast community of Erin Woods on Friday.

It happened at 8:25 a.m. as the boy was trying to cross Erin Woods Boulevard at Erin Dale Crescent S.E.

The 16-year-old boy was struck by a white Mitsubishi Endeavor.

Paramedics found him suffering from serious head injuries about 12 metres from a marked crosswalk.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 30-year-old driver, who was not injured, remained at the scene to speak with investigators.

Neither alcohol nor speed were factors in the collision.

However, police believe reduced visibility due to the sun low in the horizon was a factor.

Police say drivers have to be especially vigilant during dusk and dawn.

The police traffic section is investigating, and the CPS Victim Assistance Support Team is helping witnesses and family members.

Another teenage boy was injured in a second, unrelated collision at around the same time.

It happened in the intersection of Memorial Drive and 52 Street N.E. at around 8:30 a.m.

EMS say it appears the teen was dragged about 40 feet after being hit by a pickup truck.

Paramedics transported the teen to the Foothills Medical Centre in serious, but stable non-life-threatening condition.
