MONTREAL – Mayor Denis Coderre isn’t rushing to hire a criminal lawyer following his antics on Thursday which had him taking a jackhammer to a concrete slab that Canada Post had recently installed.

“Sometimes you have to take a stand, show judgement,” said Coderre.
“I didn’t cross the line that much.”
But lawyer Philip Schneider thinks the mayor opened himself to possible charges.

“The mayor has exposed himself to charges and to just waive them off. I, as an attorney would never advise somebody to waive the possibility to be charged and not take it seriously,” he told Global News.

Coderre could be charged with mischief under the Criminal Code or face charges under the Canada Postal Act.
However, the mayor insisted it was a necessary action in order to make federal campaign candidates take a stand about door-to-door mail service.
“I made a statement. It was a political gesture,” said Coderre.
“It was a symbolic gesture and the rest is up to what people will choose as a government on October 19.”
His actions have already gained the attention of the Bloc Québécois, the NDP and the Liberals, who said the city is right to “speak out” against the present government’s lack of consultations.
