CALGARY – A 25-year-old man has been released from police custody after accidentally shooting his neighbour in the stomach.

At about 11 p.m. Thursday, a young man unintentionally shot a legally-owned handgun in his own home, according to police. The bullet went through the wall of the house in the 0-100 block of Woodford Crescent S.W. as well as the wall of the neighbouring house. A 61-year-old neighbour was hit in the abdomen.

No details as to the circumstances that led to the firing of the gun were released on Friday.

“The investigation is still ongoing and that’s something that we’re focusing on: exactly how and why the gun came to be discharged,” said Calgary Police Detective Neil MacPherson. “As a gun owner you’ve got certain responsibilities and obligations to meet, and that’s something we’re going to be looking into—to make sure all steps that could’ve been reasonably taken were taken in this case.”

MacPherson declined to comment on how long the young man had owned the gun, or what kind of criminal charges—if any—he could be facing.

Officers were first called to the Woodbine victim’s home after reports of a shooting. Soon after, police received a second call from the young man next door, saying he’d accidentally discharged a gun.

Paramedics rushed the victim to the Foothills Medical Centre, where he remained in stable condition as of 3:30 p.m.

“The last I heard, the victim was in stable, non-life threatening condition in hospital. He was conscious and has been conscious throughout this and is likely to make a full recovery,” said MacPherson.

“It could’ve been much worse, yes. Whether you’d describe him as lucky, I don’t know.”

The 25-year-old was arrested without incident and has since been released pending further investigation.

So far, no charges have been laid.
