Raptors officially announce DeMarre Carroll signing

WATCH: Toronto Raptors President and General Manager Masai Ujiri sung the praises of newest free agent signing DeMarre Carroll during his introductory press conference Thursday morning.

TORONTO – The Toronto Raptors have officially announced the signing of forward DeMarre Carroll.

The announcement comes on a day when the team is also expected to announce the signing of Canadian Cory Joseph and forward Luis Scola.

The 28-year-old Carroll, who announced he was joining the Raptors on Twitter on July 1 when the free agency window opened, averaged 12.6 points and 5.3 rebounds in 70 games for the Atlanta Hawks last season, and was touted as one of the top players at his position available on the free-agent market.

He’s a strong defender and an outside shooting threat, and could slip into the starting lineup in place of Terrence Ross.

“I’m not focused on offense. My number one focus is defense,” said Carroll during a press conference Thursday morning in Toronto.

“I’m here to make this team a better defensive team. That’s my goal.”

Carroll started 69 games to help the Hawks to a franchise-high 60 wins and the No. 1 seed in the playoffs last season.

He’s also a proven playoff performer which the Raptors could use, having been dispatched in ugly fashion by Washington in the first round.
