Daughters of rescued hikers say parents had 2 oranges, 3 cookies and 11 pieces of candy

PENTICTON –The daughters of two rescued hikers describe the experience as surreal. Lynne Carmody and Rick Moynan were found Sunday afternoon after failing to return from a day hike at Cathedral Provincial Park last week. A massive search and rescue effort was launched the following day on June 23 to find the Ontario couple.

“There are not enough words to describe our gratitude and heartfelt thanks for everything that was done,” says Lia Carmody.

Yesterday, the hikers’ families were in a helicopter overlooking their parents’ last known location and saying their goodbyes, when at that exact moment, they were alerted their parents have been found.

“Over the radio, we hear they’ve walked into the lodge and they’re okay. I can’t even begin to describe the emotions that happened over those few minutes,” says Sara Moynan.

The  couple is seeking privacy at this time but have told their daughters how they only had two oranges, three cookies, nine Tic Tacs and two Werther Originals to survive on.

By the last day, they were left with one Tic Tac.

But despite the lack of food, they persevered, building a shelter near a drainage valley to stay hydrated.

When the hikers heard and saw helicopters, they patiently waited for rescue crews to find them.

“They were waiting to see if [rescue crews] were getting close and when they realized that [the crews] weren’t, they had to gather their strengths and go in a direction they thought would be the right way,” says Sara Moynan.

The families say it’s incredible their parents escaped with just a few scratches and bruises, and the recent adventure likely won’t stop the pair from going on any more excursions in the future.
