The site near Swift Current was chosen over one near Lanigan based on a number of factors, including less infrastructure upgrades. A total of 12 potential areas were evaluated.

The next step in the process is to determine who will build the plant. A request for proposals is forthcoming.

The 350-megawatt natural gas plant is expected to begin operations in 2019.
