Sask. player among 7 Canadians selected at MLB draft

NEW YORK – Seven Canadians, including one from Saskatchewan, were selected Tuesday on the second day of the 2015 MLB draft. Outfielder Cole Bauml, from Marysburg, Sask. was selected in the 10th round by the Detroit Tigers.

Bauml, 22, is a senior at Northern Kentucky University and previously played for Team Saskatchewan. Bauml hit .350 with 25 doubles, eight home runs, 22 RBIs and 14 stolen bases in 41 games for the Norse and earned first-team All-Atlantic Sun Conference and Atlantic Sun All-Academic honours.

He is the first Saskatchewan ball player to be drafted since 2008, when the San Diego Padres took North Battleford native Andrew Albers in the 10th round.

The Toronto Blue Jays drafted two Canadians.

Toronto selected a hometown third baseman, Conor Panas, in the ninth round and catcher Owen Spiwak of Mississauga, Ont. in the 10th.

Outfielder Miles Gordon, from Oakville, Ont. was selected in the fourth round, 115th overall, by the Cincinnati Reds. Demi Orimoloye of Ottawa also went in the fourth round, taken 121st overall by the Milwaukee Brewers.

Pitcher Ryan Kellogg of Whitby, Ont. was taken in the fifth round, 143rd overall, by the Chicago Cubs, pitcher Devon Stewart of Maple Ridge, B.C. went in the ninth round to the Cleveland Indians.

The draft started Monday night with the first two rounds, and runs through Wednesday, when rounds 11-40 will be held via conference calls.
