Second arrest made in 2014 Saskatoon jewelry store robbery

SASKATOON – A second arrest has been made in a daring Saskatoon jewelry store robbery. Rida Niam, 25, was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for the armed robbery on Feb. 1, 2014.

Four men entered the Birks store on 3rd Avenue South just before 11 a.m. wearing orange and white construction type jackets and brandishing crowbars.

They smashed display cases before taking off with a large quantity of Rolex watches and other jewelry.

Their getaway van was found on fire about 90 minutes later in the area of Bottomley Avenue and Osler Street.

Niam was picked up by Montreal police and transported back to Saskatoon on Tuesday. He was wanted for armed robbery, wearing a disguise during the commission of an offence and conspiracy to commit arson.

He is scheduled to appear Wednesday in Saskatoon provincial court.

Saskatoon police are still searching for Pierre Louis Hernandes, who is wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for armed robbery.

A fourth suspect has not been identified.

The first person charged in the robbery, Muhidiin Ahmed Farah, was arrested in Montreal in April 2014. He was identified through surveillance video.

Farah was convicted shortly after his arrest for armed robbery and breach of conditions and handed a four-year prison sentence.
