Saskatoon Blades Cameron Hebig talks NHL draft

Watch above: Saskatoon product Cameron Hebig’s dream is to play in the NHL. This summer, the Blades forward could be selected in the upcoming draft. Jack Haskins reports.

SASKATOON – Like most Saskatchewan kids who grow up playing hockey, Cameron Hebig’s dream is to play in the NHL. The Saskatoon Blades forward could be selected this summer’s draft.

In 2012, he was selected by the Blades 56th overall in the WHL bantam draft.

The 18-year-old Saskatoon product knew that stakes were high heading into his draft year and in many ways he rose to the occasion.

Hebig played in every one of the Saskatoon Blades’ 72 games this past season. He scored 14 more points than he did in this rookie season.

“Seventy-two games is something I’m grateful for. To stay healthy all year and 40 points, I’m happy with, but I wanted more,” said Hebig.

Hebig admits he put too much pressure on himself during the first half of the season. The holiday break in December offered him a chance to catch his breath.

“After Christmas I kind of got to wake up call and I just had to wake up and get things going or else my future wasn’t going to solve its self,” said Hebig.

A refreshed Hebig emerged in the New Year and racked up 25 points in the remaining 34 games.

On paper, Hebig’s 40-point season isn’t eye-popping but he remains hopeful that sometime during his strong second half of the season a scout took notice.

“I guess it just takes one team to notice you and obviously that would be awesome, it was one of my goals but if it doesn’t I just keep working and show that maybe in the future can,” said Hebig.

According to NHL Central Scouting Bureau, Hebig is ranked 177th for North American skaters.

The 53rd NHL Entry Draft will be held June 26 to 27 in Sunrise, Fla.
