The Hope-Princeton highway has reopened to single-lane alternating traffic one kilometer west of Hedley, after a head-on collision accident closed the highway for several hours.
“There was one person in each vehicle and when I got there, neither of them could comprehend what was going on, they were both in shock,” a witness tells Global News.
“They were both pinned in their vehicles and just couldn’t get out.”
RCMP say both drivers suffered serious injuries in the accident, which happened just before 8 a.m. on Saturday morning. Fire and Rescue had to cut the roof off a mini-van to get one driver out, who was subsequently rushed to Kelowna General Hospital. The second driver driving a pick-up truck was also taken to the hospital by regular ambulance.
The cause of the collision is under investigation but Graham Gore with the Hedley Fire Department says one vehicle was heading westbound and the other eastbound when the cars collided. Gore says alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
