SASKATOON – There has been a deadly house fire in Saskatoon. A passerby noticed smoke coming from a house in the 300-block of Witney Avenue North around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the house. The fire was contained to the kitchen and dining room and was brought under control in eight minutes.
Crews discovered a body in the kitchen during a search of the home. The victim’s name has not been released.
“The firefighters, here, knocked down the fire quickly but the person was already deceased,” said Morgan Hackl, Saskatoon Fire Department assistant chief.
“What we’re doing now is through the fire investigators working with police arson investigator, we’re determining the cause of the fire and the body is now removed from the home and is with a coroner and we’re waiting a report from the coroner.”

“The neighbour I have living next door is a lady,” said neighbour Sonja Popp.
“Oh beautiful lady, absolutely loved her, she was a good neighbor couldn’t have asked for anyone better.”
“We knew the lady and she used to actually come over to our house all the time when our daughter had lemonade stands and the kids did shovelling for her and that,” said neighbour Katherine Ewert.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Damage is estimated at $150,000.
