Pistol stolen from Mountie’s personal vehicle in Halifax parking lot

HALIFAX – An off-duty RCMP officer’s firearm and ammunition were stolen from a personal vehicle parked in downtown Halifax on Friday, according to police.

Halifax Regional Police said Tuesday the vehicle was parked in a lot at 1549 Lower Water Street and the officer left the service pistol locked in a box inside the vehicle, which was also locked.

When the officer returned around 10 p.m., the vehicle had been broken into and the box with the pistol and three ammunition magazines were missing.

“Mainly we want to be able to recover this weapon and get it off the streets,” said Const. Pierre Bourdages with HRP.

A spokeswoman from New Brunswick RCMP said the member had visited friends and family in Halifax on the way to CFB Gagetown for training.

RCMP policy dictates police-issued guns need to be unloaded and left inoperable through a lock. It must also be kept in a locked container.

Const. Jullie Rogers-Marsh said the case is under review to determine whether policy was followed.

Police say the firearm is a silver 9mm Smith & Wesson model 5906 pistol with RCMP identification on it. The magazines are also silver and contained 15 bullets each.
