CALGARY- A 23-year-old Calgary man is facing criminal charges after police allege he was riding his motorcycle at 246 kilometres per hour in Banff National Park.

On Thursday, just after 2:30 p.m., officers with the Bow Valley Integrated Traffic Services Unit were watching for people speeding on Highway 1 when an officer saw an eastbound motorcycle going extremely fast. The RCMP was notified and say an officer tried to stop the biker at which point he sped away at 246 kilometres per hour in a 90 kilometre per hour zone.

The officer decided not to chase the motorbike. Two other officers tried to flag down the biker without success.

About fifteen minutes later, police in Canmore spotted the motorcyclist as he entered the town and were able to pull him over.

The name of the suspect has not been released but the man has been charged with dangerous driving and flight from a police officer.
