WINNIPEG – A Winnipeg Jets fan favourite who is also a big part of the NHL team’s hopes to make the playoffs, could be ready to make his return from injury this week.

Dustin Byfuglien, the Jets’ offensively-minded defenceman, will likely return to the team’s lineup Tuesday night against the San Jose Sharks at MTS Centre in Winnipeg, head coach Paul Maurice said Monday.

Byfuglien missed the club’s recent four game road trip with an upper body injury. But he was back practicing with the Jets Monday along with Tyler Myers, another key blue-liner who’s been absent due to injury and is will likely be back in action Tuesday.

A final decision will be made on Tuesday, Maurice said.

The Jets are barely clinging to a playoff spot, and are still without the services of forwards Bryan Little and Mathieu Perrault and defenceman Ben Chiarot who are also recovering from injuries.

The Jets have 13 games left to play this season and are just one point ahead of the Los Angeles Kings in the race for the second wild card playoff spot in the NHL’s Western Conference. The Kings play the Arizona Coyotes Monday night and could bump the Jets out of that spot with a win, at least temporarily.
