CALGARY – One person was rushed to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation after a fire in the community of Huntington Hills on Friday.

The blaze in the 1000 block of 72nd Avenue N.W. broke out in a 16 unit townhouse complex just after 6 a.m.

Two people were at home at the time of the fire. EMS says one of them, a man in his 20s, was taken to the Foothills Medical Centre as a precaution.

“I went to work this morning and [when] my boyfriend woke up there was smoke in the hallway… and flames in my son’s room,” said a tearful Tracie Fagan.

Fire crews say damage was confined to the unit where the fire originated.

“There is significant damage in the suite, it will be a while before anyone can reoccupy that one,” said Battalion Chief John Cherweniuk. “But it looks like the surrounding suites are okay.”

The Calgary Fire Department says about 50 people were forced from the building as they worked to extinguish the fire. They were kept warm in several Calgary Transit buses.
